My name is Kathy Haapaoja, AKA, "Miss Kathy."
My love of reading books to children began when I became a big sister. I took the role of big sister very seriously. As the middle child of seven siblings, I had many opportunities to read to my younger siblings and pass on my love of books to them. I knew then that I had found my calling and chose a career in childhood education.
I studied Early Childhood Education at the University of Maine and worked in several fantastic preschools there. After earning an associates degree at the University of Maine, I attended Wheelock College in Boston and earned a bachelors degree in Early Childhood Education.
Since then, I have taught at preschools in Brookline, Weston, Newton, Mansfield, and Foxboro. After teaching virtual preschool for the past two years, I am ready to get back in the classroom.
Over forty years of teaching, I have enjoyed, experienced, and learned so much.
My philosophy and teaching style consists of learning through play, encouraging independence and critical thinking, and respecting each child as the unique individual that they are.
A well-rounded preschool curriculum includes math, science, literacy, building activities, music, drama, large motor development, socialization, and fun. Choosing the most important aspect of a preschool education is difficult. Why have I chosen to dedicate a class room in my home to children's literature? That is simple! One great book opens a world of adventure, learning opportunities, and fun. I tell the children, "You never know what is going to happen when we open this book!".
I have accumulated an attic full of materials, books, home made games, dress up clothes, instruments, and theme related toys. I have a blast setting up my classroom in preparation for each Book Adventure! The magic happens when the children arrive with their enthusiasm, sense of wonder and energy. As I did in my early years with my younger siblings, I enjoy the experience as much as the children.
